From the Chesapeake to the Caribbean: An IP 350 owner's log

Every November, a small fleet of Island Packet owners makes the passage south. This is one crew's account of the 1,400-mile run from Annapolis to Antigua.

We left Annapolis on November 3rd, as we have every year for the past six years. The boat was loaded — too loaded, probably — with provisions for three months, spare parts for everything that could break, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing your boat. Our IP 350, Perseverance, has made this passage four times now. She knows the way.The first three days were the usual Chesapeake-to-Cape-Hatteras anxiety: light air, then too much air, then the decision about whether to duck inside or push offshore. We pushed offshore. The IP's motion in a seaway is one of her great gifts — she rolls easily, without the snap that wears you out over a long passage.By day four we were in the Gulf Stream, running south in 20 knots of northeast wind. The boat was in her element. We made 160 miles that day — our best day's run ever.We arrived in Antigua on November 19th, 16 days out of Annapolis. The boat needed nothing. That, more than anything, is what we sail an Island Packet for.
